Google Business Profile Setup and Management

For a local business, the Google profile is often the first thing a customer sees, before the website and sometimes instead of it. It is what shows in Maps, in the panel beside a search, and in the handful of local results that sit above everything else. It is free, which means the only thing standing between you and a correct listing is somebody doing it properly.

What it actually is

It is your business's listing on Google. When somebody searches for a cleaner in your suburb and gets a small map with three businesses under it, that is the profile doing the work, not the website. When somebody taps your business name and gets your hours, your photos and your reviews without ever visiting your site, same thing.

The profile belongs to you, not to us. That is worth knowing before anybody sets one up on your behalf.

Profile work is its own service, quoted on its own. It is not folded into a website build and it is not part of a care plan, so you can buy it by itself, and you can buy it without a website at all.

What setup covers

The category

The single most consequential field on the profile, and the one most often wrong. It decides which searches you are eligible to appear in at all.

The service area

Where you actually go, set as the suburbs you actually serve rather than every suburb in the state.

Hours, details and description

Correct opening hours including the public holiday behaviour, and a description written in your own words rather than a keyword list.

Photos

Real ones, of your actual work, sized and named properly.

Services and attributes

The list of what you do, filled in properly, so the profile answers questions before somebody has to ask them.

The category trap

Overseas advice gets Australian categories wrong.

The list of categories available to an Australian profile is not the same list an American business sees.

Advice written for the United States

Regularly names a category that does not exist here. Following it either wastes a slot or has you pick something adjacent that quietly narrows what you can appear in.

What we do instead

We pick from what is actually available on an Australian profile, checked against the live list rather than a blog post.

Managing it month to month

Setup is a job with an end. Managing a profile is not: hours change, services change, photos go stale, questions arrive and sit unanswered, and Google keeps adding fields. Ongoing management is its own monthly line, priced on how much the business actually changes.

A care plan at Visibility and above tracks and reports on the profile, which is a different job from working on it. If you want both, you buy both, and we will tell you which one you actually need first.

What we will not promise

A spot in the local pack

Google names three things for local results: relevance, distance and prominence. We can work on the first, we can influence the third over time, and nobody can move your business closer to the person searching. So no promise of a spot, from us or from anybody honest. What we can do is make sure that when you are eligible to appear, the listing is correct, complete and worth tapping.

Reviews

We do not write reviews, buy reviews, or arrange them. That is against Google's rules, it gets profiles suspended, and customers can smell it.

Who it suits

Anybody customers come to

Any business that customers come to, or that travels to customers. Trades, cleaners, cafes, salons, clinics.

Particularly: a listing set up years ago by somebody who has since left, a listing with the wrong category, a business appearing twice, or a business that has moved and whose old address is still on the map.

You do not need a website to have a profile. It works better with one, because the profile links to it and the two support each other, but the profile is worth fixing first if it is broken. The site side of the same job is SEO, and your Google Ads pull their location details from this profile, so it has to be right before a campaign goes live.

Send us your business name.

Send us your business name and suburb and we will look at what the listing currently says. If it is already right, we will tell you that.
